Florida to Consider Banning Dangerous Practice of Texting While Driving

Florida lawmakers will readdress a state-wide ban on text messaging while driving in the upcoming legislative session and could become the next state to outlaw this dangerous practice. To date, 17 states have outlawed texting while driving, and six have banned talking on a handheld cell phone.

Texting while behind the wheel has been gaining attention around the world, and this British public service announcement that made news in the U.S. seeks to educate teen drivers on the consequences of texting and not paying attention to the road.

Numerous recent studies have shown that texting while driving is deadly, and it may be more dangerous than drinking and driving. It affects all of us, from putting us in danger to costing us financially. Cell phone use is a factor in more than 340,000 auto accident injuries a year, which translates into about $43 billion in damage, lost wages, medical bills and the loss of life.

Florida is already a dangerous place to drive, and poor driving habits will only make it worse. As accident attorneys, we see just how many of these accidents could have been avoided through attentive driving. To help make Florida a safer place to live, work and drive, we encourage you to practice safe driving in your local community and around the state. For more information about the legislatures efforts to safeguard our roadways, contact your local representative or senator to discuss their position on this issue.
